(Un)safe in a traffic jam? A project to protect users of motorways and expressways stuck in traffic jams.

Polish Automobile and Motorcycle Association in cooperation with the Pomeranian Road Safety Council, National Road Safety Centre,  Gdańsk University of Technology, Provincial Police Headquarters in Gdańsk, Provincial Police Headquarters in Bydgoszcz, Provincial Police Headquarters in Gdańsk, Provincial Inspectorate of Road Safety in Gdańsk, Provincial Inspectorate of Road Safety in Gdańsk, Provincial Inspectorate of Road Safety in Gdańsk, Department of Road Safety Engineering of the Polish Armed Forces, Pomeranian Association of Road Safety Carriers, Foundation for Children and Family “Rising Sun”, GTC S.A.,  After less than two months, Intertoll Polska sp. z o.o., BUDIMEX S.A. has prepared a Report on the Project for the Protection of Users of Motorways and Expressways Stuck in Road Traffic Jams.

The Project Team proposed several solutions to minimize the risk of collision with vehicles parked in traffic jams by other vehicles.

Currently, GTC is analysing the possibility of using the proposed solutions on the A1 AmberOne Motorway, taking into account the infrastructural and technical possibilities.

One of the analyzed solutions are signs informing about what is happening on the road, which would appear in the vicinity of motorway junctions at the beginning of all sections. The main purpose of introducing additional information signs will be to increase the vigilance of drivers and inform them about possible difficulties.

Another of the proposed solutions is information signage on maintaining a safe distance between vehicles, but this solution requires changes in the regulations.

Bearing in mind the safety of users, especially during the ongoing renovation works, we are currently focusing on the introduction of a solution in the form of LED information signs. Such a solution should appear on the A1 AmberOne Motorway by the end of 2025.
